I always cringe when I see people wearing the flag as pants or shirts. I don’t mind when athletes wrap themselves in it after a win—that feels like a genuine expression of pride. But so often, the loudest self-proclaimed patriots wearing the flag as clothing are the same ones spewing rhetoric that contradicts the very ideals the flag is meant to represent. The irony gets sharper when that performative patriotism is paired with behavior that undermines freedom, unity, and justice.
I will not dip the flag to anyone. I am proud to be an American. These times we live in make me realize how freedom is so precious.
